The first University Press Week was declared in the summer of 1978 by Jimmy Carter, ”in recognition of the impact, both here and abroad, of American university presses on culture and scholarship.” The aim is to highlight the many contributions that university presses have made to both readers and society at large through their publications and advancement of knowledge. In celebration of the occasion, there will be special readings organized across the country, as well as online galleries featuring select titles. UP Week is organized by the Association of American University Presses, a network of 133 university presses and of which YUP was one of the 22 founding members.

Another occasion for celebration is to be found at the UNC Press as it turns 90 this week. The occasion is commemorated with an interview with the director, John Sherer, who discusses the unique position of the press in the publishing world today as well as its recent shift toward the digital culture.

The NYU Press blog discusses the significance of Obama’s victory in the election, while looking ahead to how his decisions on important issues of the day will play out.

Looking back to history to understand the ideological stakes involved in Election Day, the University of Chicago Press presents the thoughts of Jane Addams—sociologist, author, philosopher, suffragette, Nobel Peace Prize–winner, and founder of Hull House—who was deeply concerned about the dangers that moral absolutism posed to democratic citizenship.

And in a tongue-in-cheek reference to the many Republicans who have threatened to “move to Australia if Obama wins,” Princeton University Press introduces a new book that explores the country’s meteoric rise to high living standards over just a few decades.

Did you know that teaching children to dance and make movements with their bodies can be a good way to build their self-esteem, not to mention learn academic concepts? Temple University Press explains why.

The pitched battles of the past were gorier and seemingly more barbaric than the kind of warfare that takes place today, but they were also more contained, concentrating violence on the battlefield while preventing it from reaching the rest of society. Harvard University Press explores how the face of warfare has evolved over the years and identifies lessons that we can learn from the past.

Finally, on a lighter note, here’s an introduction by the Oxford University Press to the process of making what is arguably one of the most important products around today: beer.

And be sure to check out the new What SUP? column on the Yale Press Log to catch up on all the news you’ve missed!

October is national anti-bullying awareness month, and New York University Press takes note of this by considering bullying as an everyday reality rather than as an occasional occurrence.

Princeton University Press takes a close look at the most selective public schools in the U.S. in the ”first-ever close-up look at this small, sometimes controversial, yet crucial segment of American public education.”

In a postmodern age, aestheticism can be used to survey any element of life. How people process the world around them and the aesthetic categories they use to do so is what Harvard University Press wants to know.

In an age when the debate over same-sex marriage has become an integral part of the public discourse, Penn University Press argues that marriage must now be viewed as not only a religious and cultural institution, but also a political one.

Oxford University Press explores how financial crises come about, demonstrating that they are an inherent and inevitable part of a financial system rather than haphazard, idiosyncratic occurrences.

Human sexuality and desire in inter-war Britain are the focus of Temple University Press as it attempts to trace how the British readership embraced a range of popular media to better understand the sexual dimension of its existence.

Understanding China’s security concerns is key to grasping its foreign policy, according to Columbia University Press. CUP analyzes China’s relationship with its rivals and foes as well as its place in world politics.

Stanford University Press is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis with an excerpt from Sheldon Stern’s book that provides a day-by-day account of the dramatic unfolding of events.

Our friends at Oxford University Press celebrated the 161st anniversary of the publication of Moby Dick yesterday with a retrospective slideshow of the top 10 dramatizations of Herman Melville’s classic novel.

Yesterday was also Anti-Slavery Day in the United Kingdom and Anti-Trafficking Day in the European Union. Penn Press compiled a suggested booklist centered on human trafficking and current efforts to end it.

Meanwhile, Harvard University Press honored the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council last week, which has been widely considered the most important religious event of the 20th century.

Down south, LSU Press reminds us of the nearly forgotten history of America’s controversial atomic tests in the Mississippi River Valley, uncomfortably close to major cities, at the height of the Cold War.

As the election season gets ever more exciting Temple University Press interviews the Libertarian party’s vice-presidential nominee Judge James P. Gray on his campaign and his new book on America’s drug war.

NYU Press is wondering who is going to step up and tame the megabanks given that neither presidential candidate has addressed it thus far in the campaign season.

Pregnancy: From shameful to sexy? Columbia University Press discusses the changing representations of pregnancy in popular culture and Hollywood films.

Taking a good idea from our colleagues at Columbia University Press, we thought you’d enjoy a roundup of what we’re reading from other social university presses and what goes on in our corner of the publishing world.
Is affirmative action advantageous or plain unlawful? Princeton University Press takes a look at the implications of last week’s Supreme Court case.

The NYU Press follows up on the ban on sexuality-conversion therapy that was announced in California last week, featuring a video of the writer of the recent title, Pray the Gay Away, who explains why equal rights are important to society.

Keeping with the focus on current events, the University of Nebraska Press sheds light on voting patterns in Colorado, a former “reliably Republican” state which is now a swing state.

Also on the topic of election season, the MIT Press continues its Election Tuesday series with a post that examines presidential elections through the lens of social psychology.

Over at Oxford University Press, a former U.S. Congressman who once worked with Paul Ryan explains the problematic elements of the vice presidential candidate’s Randian worldview.

The University of North Carolina Press turns our attention back to history with a post about Jesus’ limited presence in the American Revolution.

Who are the significant fighters against corruption in modern times? The University of Pennsylvania Press focuses this week on Robert F. Kennedy and his battle against organized crime.

An excerpt posted on the Harvard University Press Blog relates how fishermen in the Atlantic finally arrived at the dramatic realization that “the sea was not immortal”.

Closing on an artistic note, the University of Chicago Press brings our attention to Laura Letinsky’s collection of photographs, Venus Inferred, which beautifully captures 46 pairs of lovers in their ordinary, domestic settings.

Taking a good idea from our colleagues at Columbia University Press, we thought you’d enjoy a roundup of what we’re reading from other social university presses and what goes on in our corner of the publishing world. Dare we ask the question: SUP friends? And be sure to check out the new What SUP? column on the Yale Press Log to catch up on all the news you’ve missed!

This week The Chicago Blog has a piece on political artist John Heartfield and his use of montage to fight fascism and build war resistance.

Featured on the UNC Press Blog is a conversation about the role of Main Street in American tradition and its fight against strip malls and overly-commercialized shopping emporiums.

The University of Nebraska Press Blog discussed Colorado politics, highlighting the swing state’s role as host of Wednesday’s Presidential Debate.

The NYU Press Blog took on the opinion that Romney won said debate, writing “if the American voters believe this more moderate Romney is the real Romney, Obama will have a much more difficult road to victory than he thought two days ago.”

The MIT Press Log took the opportunity to discuss both candidates’ jobs plans, remarking, “While most voters do not believe that Obama and the Democrats offer anything close to a coherent plan for overcoming mass unemployment, they also understand that the Republicans—with their full throttle embrace of an austerity agenda—have even less to offer.”

On a lighter election note, The Princeton University Press posted a short interview with Lawrence Weinstein on how to “guesstimate” How many telephone robo-calls will be made during the campaign season?

Our friends at the University Press of Kentucky discussed the Sesquincentennial of the Civil War, highlighting October 5-7 as the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky.

Today marks another important and less bloody anniversary: The 50th anniversary of The Beatles first disc “Love Me Do.” The OUP Blog has a detailed historical account.

And last but not least, for the nerd in all of us, the University of Pennsylvania Press Log is highlighting a series of riddles to accompany to the latest Tolkien film adaptation The Hobbit.

Have a great weekend!

This week the MIT Press Log took on the “SafeHarbor” media laws, using Grooveshark as a lens through which to view the many issues associated digital copyrights.

Along the thread of contentious topics, The Chicago Blog discussed the ethics and commonality of end-of-life euthanasia in American pet-keeping practices. They also published an excerpt from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Arctic diary.

The Princeton University Press Blog published infographics and commentary on the racial bias detected in the admissions test used for New York City’s specialized high schools. This week the NAACP announced its intentions to file a complaint against this discriminatory practice.

Taking a break from today’s controversial topics, the Harvard University Press Blog is rewinding to look at Lincoln’s eventful first 100 days of presidency.

Speaking of Lincoln, this week the Columbia University Press Blog published a piece on the President Obama’s similarities to the Great Emancipator.

Our friends at the OUP blog submitted a fascinating introduction to the idea that permission-giving is a crucial aspect of successful leadership, tracing the concept from the Korean War though Kate Middleton’s fashion choices.

The UNC Press Blog has a new post up about Catholic nuns’ determination to receive education in the 19th century, despite disapprovals and set backs.

MIT Press picks up on this week’s hot topic of Mitt Romney’s ’47%’ comment, featuring a devastating take-down penned by a writer whose most recent book argues for the return of a progressive tax code.

Rewinding 80 years to the Great Depression, the UNC Press Blog explores the debate between Detroit Mayor Frank Murphy and Henry Ford over society’s obligation to the poor and underprivileged.

Are people from the camp of undecided voters mostly swinging to Obama, or to Romney? Check out the Princeton University Press Blog to find out.

Over at Harvard University Press, a fascinating post introduces Mahatma Gandhi’s thoughts on the forms of violence inherent in society and their connection to our understanding of history.

For another argument in favor of peaceful campaigns, turn to Columbia University Press for their post explaining why civil resistance is preferable to violent uprisings, in light of all the protest movements that have emerged over recent years.

Continuing the political theme, NYU Press explores the philosophies of the Constitution, our sense of American citizenship, jury duty … and Stephen Colbert.

Moving on to neuroscience and psychology, a podcast on the Oxford University Press blog focuses on the emergence of identity during childhood, as well as the link between the brain and social behavior.

The University of Chicago Press celebrates the birthdays of two major literary figures, Roger Grenier and Mike Royko.

Finally, on a more artistic note, check out the University of Nebraska Press Blog for a post about Civil War photographs—in 3D.
